They say in the field of SLA (Second Language Acquisition): the most useful tool is any of them that you’ll keep doing. It’s not as effective as active participation such as written or spoken conversations with a high level speaker or lessons with a teacher.īeing a free app it’s great. Of course it’s helpful if you need to write some sentences of your own, but even if you make a mistake, the right choice will become obvious. Afterwards you’ll need to move on to actively speak and write the language to (high-level) speakers (and hear different accents and read more natural conversations than the Duolingo cats drink milk sentences. But essentially I think Duolingo is only good for beginner levels to me, because it’s low effort to just open it, start a lesson and mark the obvious choices. With Duolingo, you get a pretty good idea of the sentence structure, words and pronunciation – and if applicable to your target language, a new writing system). Am I intrinsically motivated to actually get better at the language or just to pretend so in that moment? Well, that applies to many actions in life, so let’s just continue. Really? I start wondering what my subliminal thoughts are on this. With Duolingo I get to see (I wouldn’t say speak) 10 languages regularly, or mostly: feel good about myself patting my back like the cure green owl does when I reached my daily goal. I use Duolingo cause it has such a low-entry barrier to just hit ctrl t > du > Enter > start a new lesson > click the obvious buttons of new words. My point is: I feel the same way about many apps, including Duolingo: a business’ goal is to keep you using the product as long as possible. I could have used watching the same news analogy which gives me the feeling that I understand the world. I realize that I open dating apps all the time, but it’s usually to get a good feeling from getting attention and seeing other profiles, not so much about dating itself. I’ve started 20 courses on Duolingo, because it’s a fun and visually attractive tool to give you the idea that you’re learning a language.
